SERENATA MUSIC 2023-2024 SEASON is TAKING SHAPE
Following the success of the Stewart Goodyear concert in 2022, and the James Ehnes concert in 2023 we are pleased to continue our collaboration with the London Symphonia by sponsoring two concerts in 2023-2024. In addition we are sponsoring a concert with Western University. We are also planning a fourth spring concert which is to be announced.

The schedule is as follows:
Saturday, November 4, 2023, 7:30 P.M. Forbidden Music with the London Symphonia String Quartet at Metropolitan United Church. With Tom Allen, Narrator.

Friday , November 10, 2023, 8 P.M. The Musicians from Marlboro, at the von Kuster Hall, Western.

Saturday, January 27, 2024, 7:30 P.M. Janina Fialkowska, piano, with the London Symphonia at Metropolitan UnitedChurch.

The Forbidden Music concert, will feature the London Symphonia String Quartet composed of Joseph Lanza, violin, Emilie Pare, violin, Kelvin Enns, viola and Ben Bolt-Martin, cello. Mr. Lanza has prepared music composed by Jewish composers who were affected by the Nazi Regime beginning in the 1930s. A Canadian Premiere of the Walter Kaufman String Quartet No.5 will be featured as well as excerpts from quartets by Erwin Schulhoff and Erich Korngold. In addition a string quartet by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will provide contrast to the other pieces.
Why Mozart you ask. The Nazi rules for banning music considered degrading should have applied to Mozart who was a member of the Freemasons, wrote three operas with the Jewish librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, played with Jewish musicians and was definitely not a nationalist. However as outlined in the book, Mozart and the Nazis, by Erik Levi, They ignored 150 years of history and decided to honour him as a distinguished representative of the German nation and as an Austrian icon.

The Musicians from Marlboro are a group of young professional musicians who attend the Marlbooro Festival in Marlboro Vermont. as well in Philadelphia. Founded in 1951 by Rudolpf Serkin and others it has provided training for countless numbers of chamber musicians over its 70 year history. We will have five members playing works by Haydn, Benjamin, Walker and Mendelssohn. They are: Maria Ioudenitch, violin, Claire Bourg, violin, Beth Gutterman Chu, viola, Hayang Park, viola, and Christopher Either, cello. We are pleased to sponsor this concert with the Don Wright Faculty of Music.

More will be said about the concert with Janina Fialkowska in a subsequent bulletin.
