The Forbidden Music concert with the London Symphonia String Quartet and Tom
Allen was an exceptional musical event held at the Metropolitan United Church. The stories of how composers such as Walter Kaufmann, Erik Korngold and Edwin Schulhoff were affected by the Third Reich was eloquently told by Mr. Allen and their music was exquisitely played by the London Symphonia String Quartet. The highlight of the evening was the Canadian premiere performance of Kaufmannâs String Quartet no.5 composed in 1935 in India which was later a gift to my father when both men were involved in the Winnipeg Symphony orchestra in the 1950s.
We are still getting rave reviews from the attending and streaming audience. Our thanks go to Joseph Lanza, Andrew Chung and the staff of the London Symphonia who brought this program to fruition.
Our second program in conjunction with the Don Wright Faculty of Music was with the Musicians From Marlboro. They are a group of senior and junior musicians who have participated in the famous Vermont summer music academy. The program included works by Haydn, Mendelssohn, Benjamin and Walker. The audience was struck by the artistry of these young musicians and rewarded them with a well deserved ovation. We will be bringing them back next year.
